I think the danger lies in telling women to destroy something as beautiful as a new life. Even if you are frightened of babies and think they are weird, you do not deny that they are a new life and that life is beautiful. Freshly fallen snow, dew on the grass in the morning, kittens, puppies, your first taste of ice cream in the summer: all new things we find beautiful, adorable, cute. When a woman creates new life within her, it is beautiful. Even a woman’s body adjusts to the beauty within by radiating a new beauty.
What abortion does is destroy beauty.
Why must we tell women to destroy beauty?
We say that it is a fetus and not a child, thus it is not beauty. We show pictures of zygotes and embryos within the first 15 days of development (because after that they resemble babies) and we say that is not beauty.
But scientists and some science nerds (like myself) find beauty in cells. Plant cells, nerve cells, brain cells: beauty, amazement. Why then is an embryo a “thing” that is not beautiful? To call it so might mean that we are destroying something beautiful. No one (sans perhaps socio/psychopaths) enjoys destroying beauty.
Still we tell women that it’s okay to destroy beauty for the right reasons.
When is it ever right to destroy beauty? When it threatens a woman’s physical health? Perhaps yes, perhaps no. That belongs to each woman to decide and not me. But other beliefs state that it’s okay to destroy beauty for financial reasons or for reasons that state a woman is too young to understand and care for beauty.
Tell me, women, when did you not understand or care for beauty? Your mom putting on make-up was beautiful. A freshly blooming flower was/is beautiful. Watching a nest of eggs hatch was/is beautiful. Women, you’ve known, understood, and cared for beauty since you were little. So why are we and others [men, really], telling us that we are too young for beauty? That we cannot afford beauty, even when we appreciate it in our poorest, humblest selves?
But if at any time, these things are true, do we not give the beauty away? Share it with others? That flower you find on the sidewalk or on the side of the road you used to pick up and run to give to your best friend. Or the raccoon baby stuck without a mother in your yard, you ran and took it to an animal rescue place. We protect beauty instinctively, watch over it. So if the beauty you have cannot be supported by you, or taken care of by you, isn’t it best to share it? Give it away?
Maybe I am telling you what to do with your beauty, but it is because I think you are beautiful, capable, and understanding. Beauty is a dangerous thing, but as women, we embody it and get to carry it. So no, I do not believe beauty should be destroyed. It should be cherished. And no man, or woman, has the right to take beauty away from us as women. Nor do we have the right to take that beauty away from anyone else. The destruction of beauty never was a “right,” it was a lie.
